I wrote this song to release stress and anxiety about our current situation with the property that I inherited when my mom died. It reminds me of a Gregory Issacs Tune! Sad, soulful, relevant. I think that it will help anyone dealing with property management! I sang the song outside of the courtroom, and the people loved it. I sang it inside the waiting room at a free legal aid clinic, . Everyone there was a person of color, dealing with tenants and fines! I sang the song, and they loved it. One man there said that he was a musician, and had a studio for me. I went, and recorded the song so that I could teach it to my band! It turned out pretty good, so now it is an aspect of our fundraising efforts. lyrics
Three months behind in Rent, then came home with a brand new car
Had the nerve to ask how your money would be spent,
how did i let things get this far? Just cuz I’m a landlord, don’t mean I’m made of money
expected you to honor your word, this ain’t the land of milk and honey
Black on Black Crime, not always with a gun
Black on Black Crime, like negativity tween father and son
Black on Black Crime, when you withhold your rent
Black on Black Crime, feels so violent
I Mean, what did I do to you to deserve this kind of treatment
It’s like, you think that I am here to cover your expenses
and yet, the laws of this land protect the rights of the squatters
thank JAH for righteousness, wins over evil plotters
When you signed your lease there was no one living with you
When you were evicted, we kicked out your entire crew
Your children trashed the place and destroyed our property
Then you called the building inspector, to fine and violate me!!!
Cared for you like family, Hunh!
if only I had known
That you were out to steal from us, all that you could get
Our family inheritance, provided you with free rent!
I just want to make my ancestors proud of me
I just want to honor and pass on this legacy
everywhere I go it seems someones trying to violate me
I am standing up for my right to be/live conscious and free
You once left your children, for three weeks all alone
did not pay rent for the month, that you were gone
when you returned, it was the beginning of the ending
eviction notices to you we started sending
from all of this, sigh, what have I learned
have I found a way to keep from getting tenant burn?
there’s a difference between business and family,
yet both of them can turn on you, in the instant of a twinkling
I put my trust in My Higher Self and in the Divine
and not let ignoramuses like you drive me outta my mind
The City of Chicago is a giant machine that cares for no one
thats why the People try to solve their problems with a gun
I just want to make my ancestors proud of me
I just want to honor and pass on this legacy
everywhere I go it seems someones trying to violate me
I am standing up for my right to be/live conscious and free
I just want to make my ancestors proud of me
I just want to honor and pass on this legacy
everywhere I go it seems someones trying to violate me
I am standing up for my right to be/live conscious and free
